Suzanne Skaflestad_profileI grew up in Port Washington, Long Island having spent my first five years of my childhood in Flushing, NY. I moved to Williston, VT in January 2007 with my family just in time for the Valentine’s Day Storm. This is important information because… I LOVE SNOW! I vividly remember standing on top of a huge pile of snow with a smile on my face thinking, “I love Vermont!”

I have always enjoyed working with children of all ages. It is very rewarding to experience the value of a connection between a child and an adult.

I enjoy being a mom, being active and most recently have enjoyed biking with the whole family! It is a lot of fun to watch our son mature and to participate in our daughter’s developing personality.

Education and Professional Experiences
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Binghamton University and my Master of Social Work from Adelphi University.

I managed a 21st CCLC after school program in St. Albans for the past eight years. I am proud of the work that was accomplished there to benefit the students, families and the community, and am excited to bring my knowledge and experience to Winooski.

Prior to moving to Vermont, I lived in Smithtown, Long Island. I worked for a non-profit youth organization for over fifteen years that provided recreational, educational and counseling services to youth and their families.

What has been your greatest learning experience? (in or out of school)
My greatest learning experiences throughout my life whether it be personally or professionally were the ones that challenged me in some way and made be draw upon my independence, positive attitude, resiliency, and hope for the future.

My parents taught me valuable lessons growing up. For example, I had no idea that when I was struggling with something and my parents challenged me to find the answers myself, it would help me develop perseverance. I had no idea that when my parents encouraged me to work at a young age and expected me to pay for things with my own money, that I would appreciate my accomplishments even more.

Who do you admire and why?
I admire our son Tyler and our daughter Sarah because they truly represent life’s greatest miracle. I enjoy watching them grow, their excitement when they accomplish something, and experiencing life together.

What do you love about your current WSD position and the WSD community?
Having grown up on Long Island, I have been so fortunate to work with and experience diversity. I am looking forward to working with the diverse student population at Winooski School District. I also look forward to working with the school and community partners to offer after school learning opportunities that students are excited to attend.
