Joan_Benjamin_featuredI attended the University of Vermont and received my degree in elementary education with a minor in special education. I started teaching here in Winooski right out of college and have loved working with all the families over the past 35 years. I also love working with our dedicated teachers. Everyone challenges me to grow and become the best teacher I can be.

Education and Professional Experiences
I love spending time with my family. My husband and I have 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren that keep us laughing. We love to travel in the US, and just hang around home playing with our 2 dogs. Playing the piano is my relaxation technique.

What has been your greatest learning experience? (in or out of school)
My dad always told me, “99% of worry is for nothing, so why worry?” I have found this to be so true. Most of the time the things I have worried about don’t happen so why did I spend that time worrying? I could spend that time in a much better way. We can all put our energies into making good things happen in our lives and others. Thanks Dad!

Who do you admire and why?
I admire people who face challenges and don’t give up. They find ways to meet those challenges and move forward. They make a positive difference in their own life and others.

What do you love about your current WSD position and the WSD community?
Winooski is a very special place. Bringing so many cultures together under one roof gives us all an appreciation for the specialness of each individual. We learn from each other and support each other as we learn. I love the excitement of discovering everyone’s strengths and the challenge of helping each child grow. Building their confidence in themselves is key to building a joy in learning.
