Dear Families,

It has been another great week at JFK. On Wednesday, Governor Phil Scott, Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Alyson Eastman, Secretary of Agriculture Anson Tebbetts, and Deputy Secretary of Education Heather Bouchey came to talk to the entire third grade. The governor talked to the students about civility, what being a governor means, and about his racing career. Then Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Alyson Eastman talked to the students about dairy farming and taught them about different breeds of cows that are in Vermont. The Governor then helped Winooski Police Department School Resource Officer Jason Ziter and Deputy Secretary Alyson Eastman had out creeme coupons. The coupons are part of the Creeme from a Cop program. The program allows local police officers to acknowledge students making safe choices in the community by giving them a coupon for a free creeme. This program ran all summer, and Chicks Market sent in the most coupons in the state!

Reading aloud with your student teaches them the joy of books, and gives them the skills to be successful readers. Reading together helps students build listening skills, vocabulary, and imagination. As you know, JFK received the CLiF grant for this school year. Part of that grant is that our families agree to read with their student at home at least twice a week! There is a Read to Me contract is linked HERE. Please sign it and return it to your student’s teacher.

After several conversations around the safety of the crosswalk at the intersection of Normand Street and Main Street, the crosswalk has been removed. Last year we moved the school entrance crossing guard to the intersection of Tigan and Main Street to accommodate the work being done on Main Street.  We have found that having the crossing there in conjunction with the traffic lights has been helpful with the backup of traffic. We will continue to have crossing guards available at Main and LaFountain, as well as Tigan and Main. In your conversations with your student, please encourage them to use the crosswalks at these intersections.

We were contacted by UVM with an opportunity for the local schools in Vermont. On Thursday, October 11th at 7:05 p.m. UVM Men’s Ice Hockey team will be hosting Laurentian in their home opener. UVM is offering $10 tickets to all teachers, staff, and students. Families can purchase up to 6 at a time by clicking on this link https://fevo.me/2ztclWm

Our students continue to be amazing each and every day. So many classes have filled their heart jars and had classroom celebrations. Some classes have filled their jar three times already! We are getting closer and closer each week to an All School Celebration.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Sara Raabe

JFK Principal
