Dear Families,

As we end January, and round into February, the winter JFK assessment window for students is open. At JFK, we have a comprehensive local assessment plan to progress monitor our students growth.

For reading, we assess students using the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. This benchmarking system assesses student’s reading accuracy,  fluency, and comprehension levels. Using the F & P assessments three times a year, teachers determine student’s independent and instructional reading levels, which allows them to monitor  student reading behaviors one-on-one, engage in comprehension conversations that go beyond retelling, and make informed decisions that connect assessment to instruction. These levels typically correlate to grades K-8, but students may vary along them in their instructional levels.

In the area of math, we assess students K-2 using AIMs Web and 3-5 using STAR Math.  AIMs Web is a paper assessment that is given three times a year. In Kindergarten, this assessment is given interview style, with teachers sitting with individual students.  In both grades 1 and 2, this assessment is given whole class. In grades 3-5, STAR Math is an online assessment that is also given three times a year. The format is that students answer questions, and the test adjusts the next question to meet the student where they are at.

Have a fantastic weekend

Sara Raabe

JFK Principal
